Highlights
- Cape Town came out on top as the city has emerged as Africa’s startup hub, has strong activity in the private sector, and is a growing data center destination led by companies such as Cassava Technologies and Teraco.
- Johannesburg was right behind in second place, also with significant AI activity in the data center and financial sectors.
- Lagos has a booming AI ecosystem driven by many government initiatives and significant activity from vendors such as Huawei and telcos like Airtel. The city is a strong contender for taking the lead in the coming years.
- Nairobi has the backing of strong regulatory initiatives and benefits from its ‘Silicon Savanah’ AI cluster.
- Tunis is emerging as a key destination for overseas investment in AI and telcos. For example, Tunisie Telecom and Ooredoo have robust sovereign AI initiatives and partnerships in place.
Commenting on the growth of AI cities in Africa, Research Director Marc Einstein noted, “AI city development in Africa is immense, and cities across the continent are all vying to emerge as the regional leader. Global tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Meta and NVIDIA all increased their presence in the continent and opened new innovation centers, R&D facilities and training facilities in 2025, often for the first time.” Einstein added that with Africa being the youngest continent at a median age of only 19, there is a significant emphasis on training its youth for an AI-driven future.
Einstein also noted that the region faces some challenges in terms of AI development. Data center and mobile connectivity are bottlenecks that need to be addressed, as “even the planned tripling of data center capacity (from 827 MW to 2.4 GW) in the next five years will still have less supply than the city of London has today”, while only 2% of African mobile users are connecting via a 5G network. Einstein added that improving communications and energy infrastructure should be the top priority for local and national governments in order to fully embrace the potential of AI technology.
