At CES 2026, Murtuza Ali, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research, had a discussion with Gabor Vinci, Aptiv’s Global Business Development Head for Advanced Safety, on how the company is pushing the boundaries on Physical AI in particular autonomous vehicles through the development of its end-to-end architecture and advanced sensors.

The Power of "End-to-End" AI

Aptiv’s end-to-end architecture trains the stack as a single unit with human like behaviour, unlike traditional rules-based model that treat sensing, planning, and acting as separate silos. "We train the entire vehicle from the sensorial inputs down to the actuators to behave like a human driver," explains Vinci.

This approach by mimicking human behaviour, provides the vehicle a smoother, more reliable experience that extends the operational design domain, allowing cars to handle complex urban environments with ease.

Proprietary Silicon: The Generation 8 Radar

Aptiv’s Generation 8 Radar has been developed using its own proprietary chipset and 3D Airwave antenna technology. The custom silicon provide key advantages:

  • Cost-efficiency: By moving away from off-the-shelf solutions, Aptiv reduces the overall bill of materials for OEMs.
  • High-definition Imaging: The Gen 8 radar produces a raw point cloud so dense it looks like high-end LiDAR. It can identify the height of bridges and distinguish under-drivable objects in full 3D.
  • Seamless Integration: These sensors are compact enough to be hidden behind the vehicle's bodywork, maintaining the car's aesthetic without sacrificing safety.

Perhaps the most practical innovation discussed was the Radar-Camera fusion sensor. Aptiv has successfully embedded a miniaturized "nano radar" directly into a standard surround-view camera housing (32x32mm).

This hybrid sensor solves a major headache for both drivers and manufacturers. Traditionally, cars rely on ultrasonic sensors (the little circles on your bumper) for parking. However, ultrasonics struggle with depth accuracy and "color matching" them to the car's paint is a manufacturing nightmare.

Aptiv’s new dual-sensor can measure the exact height of a kerb. This enables features like "Door Opening Warning," which prevents you from swinging your door into a high curb – a common and frustrating cause of vehicle damage.

Beyond the Car: Robotics and Physical AI

The technology is not staying on the road. Aptiv is already seeing massive interest from the robotics industry. The same nano-radar-camera modules are being deployed on industrial warehouse robots and autonomous forklifts.

By providing these robots with 3D depth perception in a compact, robust package, Aptiv is helping bridge the gap between automotive safety and the burgeoning world of "Physical AI."

Aptiv at CES 2026 has demonstrated that it is not into selling just more hardware (sensors) but is working on solutions that scales and is AI-defined. This opens up the opportunity for OEMs in autonomy for Level 2++ and beyond and now also has many opportunities in the robotics space.
