[Commemorative Interview] Japan Country Manager Yoshio Tamura shares the seminar highlights (updated April 18)
Counterpoint Research’s FPD Division (formerly DSCC) will host the "FPD Industry Analysis Seminar: First Half of 2025" on April 22 at Tokyo Conference Center Shinagawa, 5th Floor Grand Hall. The seminar will offer in-depth analysis of the outlook for the FPD market amid complexities such as the impact of Trump tariffs.
The 2025 FPD market outlook is more unpredictable than ever. The major reason is the Trump tariffs, whose effects introduce a high degree of uncertainty.
Currently, the FPD market is performing exceptionally well compared to previous years. Anticipating the expansion of the tariffs, set manufacturers ramped up panel procurement starting around November last year, which has resulted in sustained high factory utilization rates for panel makers—even in the normally quiet Q1.
Meanwhile, actual demand is also strong, particularly in China, which accounts for 16% of the global TV market. Thanks to government subsidies encouraging TV replacements, large-screen TVs (85”, 98”, 100”) are selling well. This trend has led to a surge in demand for surface film materials like AG/LR and CH/LR used in high-end displays like MiniLED LCDs and QD LCDs, creating a very tight supply environment.
In this context, Counterpoint will provide thorough analysis in two main parts at the seminar:
1. Overall FPD Market Trends
2. FPD Application-Specific Market Analysis
We will delve into emerging markets such as ultra-large TVs and advanced televisions.
In the session “FPD Advanced Technology and Investment Trends,” topics include:
• Developments in Photo Patterned OLEDs (FMM-less, eLEAP)
• Apple iPhone panel trends
• New technologies in QD and WOLED TVs
• Diverse lineups in automotive FPDs
In addition, the following sessions will also be featured:
• “Smartphone Market from Counterpoint’s Perspective”
• “Industry Trends Observed at MWC25”
These will include regional and technological analysis of the smartphone market, as well as trends in generative AI, new AI/XR devices, and wireless technology advancements.
Guest Presentation
We welcome back Mr. Norihisa Ono, Fellow Analyst at Circle Cross Corporation, after a one-year break. His talk, titled:
“Power-Saving Technologies for OLED Panels in AI-Enabled Mobile Devices” will highlight the growing need for energy efficiency in displays as AI integration increases power consumption. Topics will include:
• LTPO for low-frequency driving
• Removal of circular polarizers with CoE (Color filter on encapsulation)
• Adoption and expansion of tandem (stacked) OLED structures
Closing Sessions
Popular recurring segments include:
• “Seminar Q&A from a Reporter’s Perspective” by Ms. Mieko Sawanobori from Electronic Device Industry News
• “Trends in Semiconductor Packaging and AI Investment” by Mr. Akihiro Tsumura, Special Editor
• “The Biannual Free Talk: Nakane ⇔ Tamura 2025” featuring Mr. Yasuo Nakane, Senior Analyst at Mizuho Securities, and Mr. Yoshio Tamura, VP & Japan Country Manager at Counterpoint
