0
December 18, 2025

Overview

5G and Gen AI convergence are reshaping the mobile adoption. For the past few quarters, global smartphone market growth has been primarily driven by premiumization and 5G upgrades. 5G smartphone is expected to reach 73% in 2025. 5G with Gen AI will lead to a behavioral shift in how people interact with mobile platforms. One in three smartphones sold globally in 2025 was GenAI-capable, up from just 20% in 2024. The premium segment (>$600 wholesale price) led volumes, with GenAI capability becoming a standard feature in new premium launches. With continuous advancements in hardware and software, including next-gen chipsets and highly optimized LLMs, we forecast that by 2029, 60% of total smartphone shipments will be GenAI-capable.
India can play a key role in driving this evolution as India provides huge scale for entire value chain due to huge consume base. With almost one billion mobile users, India can be perfect testbed for complex AI models and use cases.
