Domestic EV Makers Push Foreign Rivals to the Sidelines in China

China EV Market Trends

According to Counterpoint Global Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Q2 2024 tracker, global EV sales rose 30% YoY in the first half of 2025. China contributed 62% of these sales, with its EV market expanding 33% YoY during the same period. Within China, 61% of EV sales were Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), while the remaining share came from Plug-in Hybrid EVs (PHEVs). In H1 2025, BEV sales advanced 44% YoY, whereas PHEV sales increased by 20% YoY.

Chinese EV makers have strengthened their grip on the market, with their share rising from 65% in H1 2020 to nearly 90% in H1 2025. This has squeezed out foreign brands. U.S. automakers led by Tesla, GM, and Ford saw combined sales fall 13% YoY, while German players like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW jointly recorded a steep 40% YoY decline. However, Japanese OEMs such as Toyota, Mazda, and Nissan jointly managed 16% YoY growth, but their footprint remained less 2% market share in China.
