Global handset shipments grew 6% annually, highest growth in over last 10 quarters thanks to ramping 3G/4G smartphone demand globally
LTE was the fastest growing segment registering 83% annual growth and shipments reaching roughly 91 million units during the quarter
LTE segment is now bigger than CDMA and TD-SCDMA combined and could overtake the shrinking 2G GSM segment over the next few quarters as the number two cellular-access technology behind 3G UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA
Apple is dominating the high-value LTE segment with portfolio now tending towards an all-LTE portfolio with a 30% share in Q2 2014 helped by generous operator subsidies
Apple is closely followed by Samsung with LTE now trickling down to sub US$150 wholesale models such as Galaxy Core.
Apple & Samsung together captured 57% of the global LTE segment volumes down from 69% in Q1 2014 as brands such as LG, Coolpad and others ramped up LTE smartphone in their portfolio targeting ramping LTE volumes in US, Europe and China
USA & China remained the top LTE countries contributing to more than half of the global LTE shipments
On the other hand, LTE volumes in China are rising rapidly (we have updated our Q1 2014 LTE volumes in China) as barrage of LTE capable models from Tier-1 to small local OEMs started hitting the market in late March. The second quarter volumes reached roughly 24 million units i.e. almost 21% of the total mobile phone volumes in China
In TD-SCDMA segment, Chinese OEMs (Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo) dominated with a combined share of more than 55% during the quarter
Chinese OEMs together captured more than 87% of the TD-SCDMA market in Q2 2014 targeting with mass-market portfolio which could mean that history might repeat itself once again as TD-LTE market matures in China, Chinese vendors will possibly edge out international vendors. Coolpad is already the number one LTE smartphone supplier in China in Q2 2014 surpassing Samsung
In 3G UMTS/WCDMA segment, Samsung dominated in Q2 2014 with 28% share followed by Nokia, Huawei, Xiaomi, Alcatel One Touch and others
In the shrinking 2G GSM segment, Nokia dominates followed by Samsung, Alcatel One Touch, Micromax and long tail of microvendors from Asia supplying feature phones and low-end smartphones to India, Latin America and Middle East Africa.
In the CDMA segment, Samsung leads followed by Huawei, Coolpad ZTE and Apple. Almost 67% of the global CDMA volumes now comes from China.
