Amid the pressing climate change crisis that has rattled the world, the global demand for energy has intensified with the rapid rise of AI. In particular, the development and applications of GenAI technology require extensively more environmental resources, which can be destructive to global sustainability. Big tech companies are jumping into an AI arms race, but are leveraging the same technologies to showcase their environmental commitments due to increasing pressures from regulators, investors and consumers, corporate responsibilities and long-term economic incentives. This report lists the efforts by Big Tech in sustainability using artificial intelligence.
