Overview

Over the last few years, most smartphone OEMs have made commitments to sustainability. But beyond strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations, and specifically looking at device sustainability, things are at best hugely inconsistent, and at worst confusing and even misleading. The problem is that OEMs are in a difficult situation: they want to sell as many new devices as possible for as large a profit as possible. But a sustainable smartphone does not fit naturally into this business model.

This report casts a cynic’s eye over some of the more dubious claims made by OEMs in the last year, and discusses what more the industry needs to do to show it takes sustainability seriously.
