Samsung's Galaxy S10 series had a successful debut in the US, according to Counterpoint's new weekly US smartphone model tracker. The new S10 series sold 16% more in the first week of its sales compared to last year's sales of the Galaxy S9 series. This is a comparison of sales in the US between March 8th to 14th in 2019 with March 16th to 22nd in 2018.
The S10 series consists of three phones this year – S10 Plus, S10 and S10e. Sales of the S10 Plus is the highest among the three and accounts for 50% of volumes of the series. The S10e is selling the least out of the three. However, it is the additional S10e volumes that helped Samsung get the gains compared to the S9 series sales. Our data reveals that the combined sales of the S10 Plus and the S10 are similar to that of the S9 Plus and the S9.
Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director at Counterpoint Research commented, "The US is a key market for Samsung as this is where the majority of its premium smartphones are sold. The S10e is not cannibalizing older models like the S8 or the S9. It is actually helping Samsung gain share."
Monthly US Smartphone Market Share: Feb 2018 to Feb 2019
With the new S10 series Samsung may reclaim the top spot in the US market for the first time since June 2017.
Tom Kang, Research Director at Counterpoint Research said, "In our next March US smartphone churn report we will be able to see whether the S10 triggered Apple users to switch to Android or it was just an upgrade from existing Samsung S7 or S8 users to the S10."
Counterpoint Research predicts the S10 series to be on track to ship 40 million units in 2019 as it faces less competition than last year. Also, initial sales are stronger than that of the S9 and the S8 series.
