Silicon Photonics Fab Wars Light Up as UMC Takes on TSMC & Global Foundries

UMC Corp, one of the leading foundries globally, has expanded into the AI infrastructure race with a key Silicon Photonics (SiPh) milestone.
UMC highlighted end of last year it is working with several new customers to deliver PIC chips on this new platform for optical transceiver applications, with risk production slated for 2026 and 2027. To that promise, it has officially started mass-producing its first 12-inch silicon photonics wafers out of its Fab 12i facility in Singapore.
Partnering with SILITH Technology, UMC took a 1.6T silicon photonics platform from development to volume production readiness in just 18 months. Wafers are already qualified by a top-tier cloud customer for high-speed AI data centre deployments which is encouraging for the Taiwanese fab as a proof point of its entry into the SiPh ecosystem. The move from legacy 8-inch to 12-inch wafers is prudent to drive massive economies of scale, lower per-unit costs, and high-volume reliability.

SiPh is moving into mainstream manufacturing quickly, and it's great to see diversification and UMC stepping up.
Focused Pure Play for SiPh UMC is doubling down on the pure-play AI optical interconnect market rather than chasing a more integrated model. Also, a Singapore hub offers good geopolitical cover vs just Taiwan.
GlobalFoundries has been an incumbent in SiPh with its SCALE™. But UMC's announcement could challenge GF's market share and mindshare. TSMC is working on its own advanced COUPE architecture, which nicely chimes with the leadership in end-to-end AI compute. It will be interesting to see how its customers diversify to employ standalone fabs such as UMC for the upcoming optical transceiver wave.
