OLED to Take 67% of 2023-2030 Display Equipment Spending as Gen 8.7 IT OLED Nears Mass Production
- From 2023 to 2030, OLED is projected to account for 67% of total display equipment spending, followed by LCD at 30% and Micro-OLED at 2%.
- LCD is expected to rebound in 2028, driven by HKC’s planned G9.x (3370×1940 mm) new build.
- With deposition methods now defined for G8.7 IT OLED, Samsung Display (SDC) and BOE have confirmed FMM and plan to start mass production this year.

Counterpoint Research has expanded its global display capex outlook period from 2028 to 2030, starting this quarter. Overall, OLED spending is expected to account for 67% of total global display equipment spending from 2023 to 2030, while LCD is forecast at 30% and Micro-OLED at 2%.
According to Counterpoint Research’s Quarterly Display Capex and Equipment Market Share Report, Q1 2026, total global display equipment spending in 2026 is projected to increase 32% YoY. Within this, LCD is expected to decline 45% YoY, while OLED is forecast to grow 68% YoY. This upswing in OLED is expected to be driven primarily by G8.7 IT OLED initiatives, including from BOE B16, China Star t8 and Visionox V5.
While the planned G10.5 LCD investment in India by Adani Group and Foxconn has been cancelled, HKC’s expected G9.x (3370×1940 mm) LCD project will likely lift LCD in 2028. In parallel, incremental equipment spending related to new G6 smartphone OLED technologies is also expected to continue.
Display Equipment Capex by Technology

Associate Director Jayden Lee said, “Deposition methods for G8.7 OLED* are now determined across major display makers. Samsung Display (SDC) and BOE have selected fine metal mask (FMM), Visionox and LG Display have confirmed photo-patterned (mask-less) OLED, and China Star has finalized RGB inkjet printing. SDC and BOE, which are adopting FMM, plan to enter mass production within this year, while Visionox and China Star expect equipment move-in to begin from Q4 2026.”
*G8.7 (2290x2620 mm) OLED pixel formation methods
· Fine Metal Mask (FMM)
: A mainstream approach in which organic materials are heated under vacuum to evaporate and are deposited through an ultra-thin metal mask to form RGB sub-pixels.
· Photo-Patterned (or “mask-less”) OLED: A method that avoids FMM by using photolithography-based patterning to define pixel structures, enabling deposition without an FMM.
· RGB Inkjet Printing
: A technique that dispenses OLED materials in liquid form through inkjet nozzles to build RGB pixels via solution processing.
