The global display glass substrates market is increasingly being dominated by Mainland China, which now accounts for 75% of total demand, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest white paper – The Display Glass Industry Part 1. The huge investments in Mainland China for flat panel display (FPD) capacity for large screen sizes and fab shutdowns in South Korea and Japan have led to an unprecedented dominance by Mainland China.

Part 1 of the white paper covers the FPD glass industry in the context of display glass substrates, a keystone component for FPDs with critical impact on cost and performance. The white paper will be written in two parts; Part 2 will cover key criteria that panel makers use to choose glass suppliers and dig deeper into the display glass industry in Mainland China.

“Advancements in glass technology have been one of the most important building blocks in making FPDs more useful and ubiquitous as well as more affordable,” said Bob O’Brien, Research Director at Counterpoint. “This white paper explains the importance of glass to the FPD industry and provides a profile of the display glass industry.”

The white paper covers some technical aspects with descriptions that the general business reader can understand, including a section on advanced glass. Although advanced display backplane technologies require special glass formulations, the largest part of the display glass substrate market serves amorphous silicon (a-Si) backplanes.

Three international glass makers – Corning from the US, and AGC and NEG from Japan – supply the majority of display glass worldwide, and all three have multiple production locations in Mainland China. The white paper presents profiles of these three companies, along with two domestic glass makers in Mainland China.

The white paper has been written originally in English but will be offered in Chinese (traditional and simplified), Japanese and Korean versions.
