Market Highlights
- Total global LLM users surpassed 3.8 billion in the first quarter of 2026, led by Meta, Google and OpenAI, which have maintained their global lead over Chinese players. The most interesting development of the quarter was the big increase in monetization by Anthropic, as its revenue per user is now more than triple that of its closest competitor, Microsoft. The next quarter will be keenly watched as the market tries to catch up with Anthropic.
- The total number of monthly active LLM users globally crossed 3.8 billion in Q1 2026 and generated around $20.7 billion in revenues for the providers.
- Anthropic was the market leader in terms of revenues, taking 31.4% share. What is impressive is that it did so with far fewer users than OpenAI. Anthropic’s average monthly revenue per user is the highest in the industry at $16.2, showing it has successfully captured the high-end professional market.
- OpenAI held 29.0% revenue share. While this is a huge slice of the market, the company’s average revenue per user was much lower at $2.2. This suggests OpenAI is focused on being the “everybody platform” rather than a niche premium service.
- Google has one of the largest user bases in the world, yet it only captured 12.1% of the revenue. Its revenue per user was just $1.1, indicating that most of its users are likely using free versions integrated into other Google products.
- Microsoft held 7.2% of the overall global revenue. With an average revenue per user of $5.0, it performed better than OpenAI or Google, likely due to business-heavy Enterprise Co-pilot subscriptions.
- Baidu (3.6%) and Alibaba (2.9%) held steady. Notably, Baidu made more money per user ($1.3) than OpenAI. This shows Baidu is successfully moving toward paid business and professional users in China.
