As expected, Apple has introduced its next-generation 8.5” OLED iPad mini and 14.2” and 16.3” OLED MacBook Pro models, marking a significant milestone in the company’s transition toward OLED technology across its IT product portfolio. These launches introduce tandem OLED technology across all three models, while the MacBook Pro adds touchscreen functionality for the first time.

iPad mini: Tandem OLED expands into Apple’s compact tablet portfolio

The new iPad mini features an 8.5” OLED display supplied by Samsung Display (SDC). It has a resolution of 2316 × 1512, 60Hz refresh rate and an LTPS backplane.

The transition from LCD to OLED represents a substantial display upgrade for Apple's compact tablet lineup, delivering higher contrast, improved brightness and greater power efficiency. The larger display, which is also available with an optional nano-texture finish, offers more than twice the peak brightness of the previous-generation iPad mini.

The new model is powered by Apple's A20 Pro processor, manufactured using a 2nm process, providing significant improvements in CPU, GPU and AI performance. Key enhancements include:

  • Processing and AI: The A20 Pro features up to a 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU, delivering up to 60% faster multi-threaded CPU performance, 2.7x faster graphics and 4.5x faster AI performance compared with the previous generation. The 512GB configuration also features a dual 16-core Neural Engine to accelerate demanding on-device AI workloads.
  • Camera and multimedia: A new 12MP Center Stage front-facing camera positioned along the landscape edge improves video conferencing, while Acoustic Display technology enhances audio performance.
  • Connectivity: Apple's N1 wireless chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular configurations integrate Apple's C2 modem, providing up to 50% faster cellular data speeds with improved power efficiency.
  • Software: iPadOS 27 introduces enhanced Apple Intelligence and Siri capabilities, supporting more contextual AI experiences and productivity applications.

The new iPad mini is available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations, with pre-orders beginning October 28 and availability starting November 6. Pricing starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

From a display industry perspective, Apple's introduction of tandem OLED into the iPad mini expands OLED penetration beyond the premium iPad Pro lineup. While the higher starting price could limit adoption among more price-sensitive consumers, the combination of improved display performance, advanced AI capabilities and a larger screen strengthens the product's premium positioning.
