Bridging the Technological Gap to Compete in the China Market

Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset in China to help bridge the gap between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Elite. There is a significant performance and price gap between Snapdragon’s third-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the fourth-gen Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 bridges the gap by offering performance as good as Snapdragon 8 Elite at a lower price segment, targeting the affordable premium market.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5’s core competency is that it uses custom-core architecture. Custom cores let companies optimize everything from compiler behavior to memory fetch patterns, creating experiences that Cortex-based competitors cannot easily match, and Qualcomm can align its CPU roadmap with AI and GPU strategy, and control the Android performance story.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Specifications

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the latest addition to Qualcomm’s premium smartphone SoC series portfolio lineup. The SoC is manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm N3P process node. It features the third-gen Qualcomm Oryon CPU, an Adreno 840 GPU with hardware accelerated ray tracing, mesh shading tech for developers allowing group geometry to be processed efficiently, enabling smarter graphics-driven rendering, and Auto Variable Rate Shading (VRS), which optimizes GPU resources to boost performance while saving power and Frame Motion Engine 3.0 for smoother frame rates in supported gaming titles. Connectivity also offers up to 50% lower latency with Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 features Oryon CPU cores, with peak performance of 3.8 GHz, offering up to 42% CPU power efficiency and 13% SoC power saving as compared to its predecessor. The new CPU improves device performance by 36% while the newer Adreno 840 GPU enhances graphics performance by 11% and power efficiency by 28%.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 CPU Key Specs:

  • Two prime cores clocked up to 3.8GHz, and six performance cores clocked up to 3.32 GHz
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 also features triple 20-bit ISPs, Night Vision 3.0 for smooth low-light video at 60 FPS and Snapdragon Audio Sense, which eliminates background wind noise while recording HDR audio. The ISP is equipped with AI-powered features to dynamically adjusts skin, sky, and vegetation with real-time tone control.
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 supports LPDDR5X with speeds of up to 4800MHz and supports UFS 4.1 storage.

Enhanced Connectivity with AI-based Optimizations

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is equipped with the Qualcomm X80 5G modem with AI-powered 5G sensing, featuring 6 antennas, offering downlink of 10 Gbps and uplink of 3.5 Gbps. There is also the Qualcomm FastConnect 7900 Mobile Connectivity Platform, which supports Wi-Fi 7 with speeds of up to 5.8 Gbps, Bluetooth 6.0, and UWB with AI-powered proximity solutions.

Qualcomm Hexagon NPU

The Hexagon NPU on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 delivers a 46% faster performance, generation-over-generation. It features a fused AI accelerator architecture with six scalar configurations, eight vector configurations, and one accelerator configuration, enabling efficient handling of complex AI workloads. With technologies like Hexagon Direct Link, and Micro Tile Inferencing, the NPU delivers higher throughput and lower latency for generative AI applications. The SoC also features Qualcomm Sensing Hub, to enable personalized agentic AI experience to the user.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 surpasses its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, in multiple areas. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is built on TSMC’s 4nm (N4P) technology, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm (N3P) process, offering better performance and efficiency, as it incorporates more transistors to support the AI-powered features of the SoC. Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 adopts Qualcomm’s Oryon cores, whereas Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has Arm-based cores, thus offering higher clock speed and power saving as compared to its predecessor. The newer Adreno GPU is 11% faster compared to its predecessor and introduces hardware accelerated ray tracing. The Hexagon NPU is 46% faster compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with AI-based enhancements.
