Overview

India’s smartphone industry entered 2026 in the middle of the most disruptive cost environment it had faced in over a decade. The primary cause was supply constraints: AI data centers had absorbed the bulk of global DRAM and NAND output, pushing memory prices up roughly fourfold by Q2 2026, with rupee depreciation compounding the effect for India specifically. The result was a round of price increases that landed very unevenly. The industry saw this coming, but not all brands were equally prepared to adjust their portfolios to align with consumer preferences. The industry’s broad response has been a pivot toward more value-driven offerings. As a result, India's mid-range and premium segments grew 22% and 10% YoY in H1 2026 even as overall volumes softened. Against this backdrop, OnePlus’s own pricing response stands out for its restraint. The brand’s maximum recorded price increase through H1 2026 was 12%, among the lowest in the industry. This was achieved by balancing specs to price in the current scenario which helped in absorbing the steepest hikes.

This whitepaper analyses the smartphone price hikes in India in the first half of 2026. It also looks at how OnePlus kept its price increases well below the industry average through early component planning and a wide portfolio, while continuing to grow shipments. The paper closes with consumer demand trends and the outlook for the rest of 2026.
