Marvell Outlines Major Data Center Socket Wins at Custom AI Investor Event
Marvell held its Custom AI Investor Event in June, during which it made several interesting announcements. On the product side, Marvell announced two crucial developments.
Industry’s first 2nm custom SRAM memory
Marvell announced a custom SRAM solution to boost the performance of custom XPUs and other devices in AI servers. Boasting the highest bandwidth per mm2, Marvell’s custom SRAM reduces power by up to 66% compared to standard on-chip SRAM and also reduces total die area (i.e. not just SRAM area) by up to 15%.
Package Integrated Voltage Regulator (PIVR)
A pre-validated, integrated power solution to improve power delivery to XPUs and other chips. Located on the underside of an XPU, for example, Marvell claims that this will enable the development of 4kW+ compute platforms.
However, perhaps the biggest news was the announcement that Marvell has now won a total of 18 custom compute sockets, comprising five XPU sockets and 13 custom attach sockets (non-XPU sockets such as NICs, compute fabric switches, and co-processors). This includes nine new attach socket wins from its existing US hyperscaler customers plus two new XPU sockets and four new custom attach socket wins from emerging hyperscalers. Additionally, the company claims that it has a pipeline of 50+ similar opportunities.
Analyst Take:
- Marvell is unique as an end-to-end full service custom silicon provider offering pre-tested, pre-integrated IP and architecture support coupled with best-in-class design.
- With a new set of design wins under its belt, Counterpoint Research believes Marvell is well-positioned to benefit further from the burgeoning data center custom silicon opportunity and should exceed its (rather conservative) 20% target market share of the $94 billion data center silicon market by 2028.
