For the second year in a row, Google took the opportunity at its annual developer conference to claim its stake as the key pathway for billions of users to advanced AI features. The announcements make it clear that Google is prepared to defend its user base from emerging competition, while simultaneously enhancing the capabilities of its developers to deliver on the promise of agentic AI.
Google launched Gemini 3.5 Flash as the platform to drive AI agent development in the near-term. The company sees improvements that warrant this model to be the main workhorse, with the Pro version scheduled to launch later this year.
With Gemini Spark, Google takes the next step in driving agentic AI across its platforms and interaction surfaces – a 24/7 agent platform living in the Gemini app, which can complete tasks autonomously for the end user.
Monetization is taking shape on two fronts. Google is laying the groundwork for agentic commerce, tied to search, with the “Universal Cart,” Agent-2-agent payment platform and with a new Google AI Ultra plan for $100/month.

At Google’s I/O 2026 developer conference, the company took the next step on the path to changing the AI focus from assistive productivity (summarization, generation, text prompts) to autonomous action, delivered by agents, for consumers and enterprise users.
For the second year in a row, Google is making it clear that is spending big on enabling its billions of users across key apps, including Workspace, to benefit from its most advanced AI models. At the same time, the company is positioning its AI stack as the turn-key solution for developers, instead of ceding any room to competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI. Last year, Google I/O resulted in proclamations of “Google getting its groove back.” This year, Google is building on this momentum and accelerating into an agentic AI future.
This requires a two-pronged path: on one side, consumers are enabled with new tools for creation, automation, and discovery. On the other hand, the enterprise is exposed to more tools that can handle multi-step, autonomous workflows execute tasks 24/7 while humans can provide supervision – enabling companies to dramatically change their workflows.
Importantly, Google is showing platforms and frameworks that are critical to deliver on the promise of agentic AI: Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

Google introduced its latest frontier model family, Gemini 3.5, rolling out Gemini 3.5 Flash first. Google is choosing to optimize speed and token cost optimization with 3.5 Flash. The company focused on this version during the keynote, while promising to deliver the Pro version soon, making sure to highlight that Flash is now sufficiently powered and capable for many tasks. The performance is enabled by the new TPU v8 hardware architecture and outperforms previous generations (like Gemini 3.1 Pro).
For agent workflows, including multiple API calls, millisecond latency and cost efficiency are critical. Gemini 3.5 Flash provides performance needed to make background agents viable at an enterprise scale.
Google introduced Gemini Omni (beginning with Gemini Omni Flash) to move past language-only processing. This model acts as a "world model," blending reasoning from Google’s specialized creative and simulation models (like Veo and Genie) to understand real-world concepts like gravity.
Omni focuses on generating "any output from any input," starting with multi-modal video creation based on conversational, natural-language video editing. Google unified its developer toolchain under Antigravity 2.0. The tool set features a standalone desktop application, a lightweight CLI, and an SDK designed to orchestrate teams of parallel agents.
With this, Google establishes a direct competitor to standalone agent frameworks and other developer tools. By integrating native Android support directly into Google AI Studio and providing a managed enterprise platform for hosting custom agents, Google is trying to establish itself as the core tool provider for AI development.
One of the most critical announcements at the event, in terms of laying the foundation for consumer and enterprise AI agents were the announcements surrounding Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Agents Payments Protocol (AP2), and the consumer-facing Universal Cart.
Enabling agent-led e-commerce is a critical part of the role Google needs to play in this new era of interaction. If agents are going to manage a user’s digital life, they need to know how to spend money securely. By building a unified, multi-merchant shopping framework tied to Google Wallet, Google is positioning itself as the transaction layer for the agent economy. The Universal Cart, for consumers, can autonomously track price drops, check product compatibilities, and factor in payment card benefits in the background enabling a seamless experience while enabling users to discover more detailed information to make more educated choices.
By focusing on this foundational part of the user and enterprise experience, Google shows that it is deliberately enabling the complete experience while not neglecting real concerns from across the ecosystem. Users need to be able to trust agents to complete transactions correctly, with a clear path to rectify an issue should it arise – while keeping private data secure. Businesses, on the other hand, must be able to see the value of AI agent driven interactions, without fear of losing the direct connection to their customers. Spending time on this part of the experience is critical, but not the most exciting part of the show.
Implications and Impact
Google’s premium tier strategy is changing. By introducing a top-tier $100/month AI Ultra plan, Google is testing the limits of what users will pay for a truly autonomous assistant. The key differentiator is Gemini Spark which interacts with third-party tools via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and completes tasks across Workspace.
The implementation of "Generative UI in Search" in the upgraded search box means that Google is moving towards agent interaction as part of search. When users can invoke agents directly via a search query to monitor topics and act on data continuously, enterprises and advertising models need to be adjusted and changed. There is potential for brands to engage with their target audience in a more personalized way sooner in the interaction arch, as relevant content can be surfaced in a much more engaging way – but businesses need to be ready for this shift.
This shift points to one of the key hurdles for agentic AI to ramp quickly: Google is showing the potential and laying the foundations, now it will take time for the ecosystem to embrace and utilize these capabilities. Combine this with regional differences in data center capacity availability, 5G and AI-ready device penetration, and the road ahead becomes long and winding. It will be critical for all involved to be keenly aware of this, and the learning curve required for the end-user, as technology developments can be created at a faster pace than ever before.
A part of the development of advanced AI tools and agents must be a framework to manage liability. As generative media and omni-channel creation become frictionless, enterprise liability increases. Google’s expansion of SynthID and content transparency verification across Search, Chrome, and Pixel is the correct move to ensure enterprise data and public information retain verifiable lineage (C2PA). Industry standards are going to be critical to ensure end-to-end verifiable trust.
Google I/O 2026 demonstrates that Google is no longer just model benchmarking against OpenAI or Anthropic. The shift now turns towards agent-enablement, deployment, and integration. The company showed that it has a leading complete stack of tools ready for developers from models to tools and the consumer touchpoints including payments. For enterprises, there should be a shift from chatbots to multi-agent architectures. Priority should be given to automating long-horizon engineering tasks and preparing e-commerce frontends to support the UCP, ensuring compatibility with the incoming wave of autonomous buyer agents. However, every development needs to keep the end user in mind. It will be critical to ensure transparency, reliability, and security, while at the same time working to broaden the reach of these capabilities across apps and services. The consumer cannot be left out of the loop – otherwise resistance to AI and AI agents will significantly stunt adoption for the near future.
