Global existing smartphone retail prices have increased 15% on average so far in 2026, with some models nearly doubling in price, as OEMs continue to pass higher memory and component costs on to consumers, according to Counterpoint Research's Global Smartphone Price Increase Tracker. Price-sensitive markets are facing greater pressure than markets with a higher premium mix, while new smartphones are also launching at higher prices than their predecessors, pointing to a broader shift toward higher smartphone prices.

Commenting on the findings, Research Director Tarun Pathak said, "Memory has become a key driver of smartphone BoM costs, resetting pricing across the industry and leaving OEMs with limited room to absorb higher costs. The impact is most acute in price-sensitive markets, where average price increases of 16%-21% are making devices less affordable. Consumers are responding by delaying upgrades, pushing purchases around big sales events or turning to the pre-owned market. In markets with a higher premium mix, financing and trade-in offers are helping cushion the impact of higher prices.”

India saw the largest increase, rising 21%, followed by Asia Pacific at 19% and the Middle East & Africa at 18%. The low- and mid-end segments account for a large share of smartphone volumes in these markets, limiting OEMs' ability to absorb higher memory-driven BoM costs. Latin America followed with a 16% rise, while reduced promotional discounts have pushed effective prices up.

Markets with a higher premium mix have seen more moderate retail price increases, with China rising 10%, Europe 7% and the US 5%. In these markets, price increases have been concentrated largely in new launches rather than existing smartphones. In markets like the US, the impact is also less immediate as many consumers use postpaid plans, where device costs are spread across monthly payments, reducing the impact of higher upfront prices.

Beyond price increases, OEMs are also optimizing specifications to manage costs, with common measures including lower storage capacities, reduced camera configurations and the reintroduction of 4G models in select price segments. On the demand side, carriers and retailers are using financing, trade-in programs and installment plans to cushion the impact of higher prices.

Apple continues to hold iPhone prices steady. This is significant because the iPhone accounts for more than half of Apple’s total revenue, memory prices have risen fourfold since Q4 2025 and macroeconomic headwinds persist.

Commenting on the outlook, Senior Analyst Karn Chauhan said, “Prices for new smartphones are expected to keep rising over the coming quarters, including for the upcoming iPhone 18 series. Memory shortages and elevated component costs are expected to persist in the near term, putting further pressure on OEM margins. OEMs are likely to prioritize high-end models to protect profitability, while using specification changes, storage configurations and portfolio optimization to limit price increases in price-sensitive markets.”
