Memory Price Surge Triggers Shifts in Smartphone BOM Structure
- Sustained memory price hikes are reshaping smartphone BoM cost structures.
- The entry-level segment is impacted hardest, with a memory surge in Q1 2026 driving an over 20% QoQ increase in total BoM cost.
- To protect profit margins, smartphone OEMs are simplifying hardware specs and portfolios.
- Higher retail prices are unavoidable in 2026 as rising costs will be passed to consumers.

Mobile memory prices are experiencing a sustained surge, with DRAM prices increasing by over 50% QoQ and NAND Flash prices jumping by over 90% QoQ in Q1 2026, according to Counterpoint Research’s Memory Price Tracker.
This dramatic price increase is driving a structural shift in smartphone Bill of Materials (BOM) costs. Data from Counterpoint’s BoM & Teardown Service reveals that while all segments are affected, the impact is disproportionately severe for entry-level devices.
- Low-end (wholesale price <$200): Assuming other component costs remain stable, a typical 6GB LPDDR4X + 128GB eMMC memory configuration will drive its total BOM cost surge by 25% QoQ in Q1 2026. Memory will account for a massive 43% of the total BOM.
- Mid-end (wholesale price $400-$600): This segment often uses diversified specs to target different groups of users. For an 8GB LPDDR5X + 256GB UFS 4.0 configuration, the BOM share for DRAM and NAND will rise to 14% and 11%, respectively, in Q1 2026. These figures are expected to climb to 20% and 16% by Q2 2026.
- Premium and Flagship (wholesale price >$800): Flagships are going to face dual cost pressures from high-capacity memory and 2nm flagship SoCs. For a 16GB LPDDR5X HKMG + 512GB UFS 4.1 flagship setup, BOM costs are projected to rise by $100-$150 by Q2 2026. By then, DRAM and NAND will represent 23% and 18% of the total BOM, respectively.
Smartphone Memory Cost Share Estimation in Different Price Segments (Q1 2025 – Q2 2026)

Senior Analyst Shenghao Bai noted, “The memory price surge is delivering a structural impact to smartphone BOM costs. In 2026, OEMs will struggle to balance component costs, gross margins and shipment targets. Those who rely heavily on entry-level models to drive market share will face a significant risk of short-term losses.”
To mitigate these pressures, smartphone OEMs are modifying their strategies:
- Portfolio streamlining: Reducing expected shipment targets for low-end models.
- Spec optimization: Tightening control over hardware configurations and downgrading non-core specifications to offset costs.
Shenghao further said, “Considering the massive memory price surge, standard cost-cutting measures may only result in limited returns. A rise in retail prices seems unavoidable in 2026. We expect low-end retail prices to increase by around $30, while the cost pressures on some premium flagships will likely be passed on to consumers, resulting in price hikes of $150 to $200.”
