September 7, 2026
  • Samsung’s global weekly smartphone sales for 2026 showed a YoY decline for most of the second quarter, but starting with the launch of the Galaxy Z8 series in week 32, sales showed a rapid recovery, pushing 2026 sales above the 2025 baseline.
  • Sales of the Galaxy Z8 series during the first two weeks increased by 8% compared to the Galaxy Z7 launch period (July 25-August 2, 2025 vs. August 7-15, 2026).
  • Both the surge in post-launch sales and the sharp decline in pre-launch sales exceeded 2025 levels, demonstrating that the Galaxy Z8 effectively satisfied significant potential demand in just one week.

According to Counterpoint Research’s weekly smartphone sales tracker, Samsung’s Galaxy Z8 series recorded strong initial sales. The new lineup – the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 – launched on August 7, 2026, recorded a 8% increase in sales during the first two weeks compared to the previous year’s Galaxy Z7 series.

This strong start has paved the way for Samsung Electronics to enter the third quarter with meaningful growth in its most profitable product segments, while wrapping up a difficult first half that consistently fell short of the 2025 baseline.

Note: Week 31 ended on August 2 in 2025 and August 1 in 2026

From week 20 to week 31, Samsung’s 2026 sales consistently underperformed compared to the previous year, due to the cumulative impact of the global memory price crisis, which caused average device selling prices to hit all-time highs and led many consumers to postpone replacement decisions. This trend clearly reversed starting in week 32. As Galaxy Z8 pre-orders turned into actual deliveries, Samsung’s 2026 sales surpassed the 2025 baseline again in just one week and maintained that gap through week 33.

Sales of the Galaxy Z8 series during the first two weeks (August 7–15, 2026) appear to have increased by 8% compared to the same period for the Galaxy Z7 series (July 25–August 2, 2025).

While a 8% increase in the first two weeks is a significant figure, it holds even greater significance considering market conditions. The average selling price (ASP) of smartphones rose significantly overall in 2026 due to soaring memory prices. Despite these price increases, Samsung was able to boost foldable phone sales, largely driven by the popularity of the newly added passport-style form factor.

Associate Director Sujeong Lim commented, “We estimate that the Z Fold 8 accounted for roughly 57% of Z8 series sales during the first two weeks after launch, thanks to a clear and compelling value proposition. For consumers considering a foldable phone, this product offers additional specification options by providing an attractive aspect ratio that transforms it into a tablet when unfolded, along with a versatile multitasking experience.” Lim also noted: “Considering that initial supply was not smooth due to stockouts at some retailers, sales of the Z8 are expected to remain relatively stable as supply normalizes.”

Associate Director Liz Lee added, “The successful launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will face its most critical test within the next few weeks. Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone this week; based on current information, it appears to adopt a similar display size and aspect ratio to the Z Fold 8, targeting the high-value premium smartphone market that Samsung has painstakingly built over six generations. The most critical competitive landscape in the current premium device market is who will lead the upgrade cycle—specifically, the key question will be whether Samsung can retain its existing foldable user base and continue converting premium Galaxy users, as Apple taps into its large iPhone Pro and Pro Max user base while also attracting some existing Android foldable users.”
