India's smartphone financing ecosystem continues to evolve in Q2 2026 as brands increasingly focused on improving affordability through more flexible repayment structures. According to Counterpoint Research's Monthly Smartphone Financing Tracker, the average financing tenure for mainline channel reached 10 months in Q2 2026, while premium brands such as Apple recorded an average tenure of 17.2 months, reflecting the growing use of longer-tenure financing to lower monthly ownership costs and support upgrades to higher-value smartphones.
Average Tenure for Financing in Mainline Channel – Q2 2026

Commenting on the market dynamics, Research Director Tarun Pathak said, “The role of smartphone financing is no longer just about offering longer EMI tenures; it's about making monthly ownership more affordable. Consumers today are increasingly looking at how much they need to pay every month rather than focusing solely on the device's upfront price. As a result, the average financing tenure has increased to 10 months, with premium smartphones witnessing even longer repayment periods. In response, brands and financing partners are introducing more flexible financing programs, including EMI plans extending up to 30 months, to keep monthly payments affordable and make premium smartphones accessible to a wider consumer base. Rising smartphone prices are making financing a critical growth enabler, helping brands drive upgrades, expand the premium segment, and bring higher-value smartphones within consumers' monthly budgets”
Tier Wise Financing Penetration in Mainline Channel – Q2 2026 vs Q2 2025

Commenting on City Tier dynamics Senior Analyst, Prachir Singh said, “While financing penetration increased across all city tiers in Q2 2026, the strongest momentum continued to come from Tier 2 and smaller markets. Financing accounted for 57.5% of smartphone purchases in Tier 2, the highest among all tiers, while Tier 3 & beyond also maintained financing penetration above 50%. This growth is driven by the expanding reach of NBFC financing in non-metro markets, rising consumer aspirations to upgrade to higher-value smartphones, and the availability of more flexible affordability programs offered by brands and retail partners. Among smartphone brands, Samsung continued to lead the market in terms of smartphone units sold through financing, followed by vivo and Apple”.
Looking ahead, financing is expected to be one of the biggest demand drivers during the upcoming festive season, with brands shifting their focus from outright discounts to affordability led offers. The growing availability of longer tenure EMIs, flexible repayment structures and trade-in programs will continue to lower the effective monthly cost of smartphone ownership. At the same time RBI’s new device locking framework for financed smartphones is expected to strengthen the lending ecosystem by improving credit confidence while incorporating borrower safeguards, encouraging broader participation from banks and NBFCs. Overall, we expect smartphone financing (NBFC, credit/debit card EMI) to account for 42% of total smartphone sales in India in 2026, underscoring its growing role in driving smartphone demand and premiumization”.
