"Many of the most exciting use cases involving 5G require the use of Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). This is because the time it takes for requests from a mobile device to get to a central cloud and back again can be quite long. By placing a server at the edge of the network, round-trip delays can be reduced to a few milliseconds. The next question is who will provide the MEC servers? The news from Amazon suggests that it, and other hyper-scale cloud providers, will likely be foremost among the MEC providers. Other candidates include infrastructure vendors, like Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and Samsung, or other enterprise cloud server providers – of which there are many. This will be a critical piece of the 5G ecosystem, so expect a developing tussle for supremacy among multiple players. The end result will likely be a rich mix of different providers depending on the specific use-case, or vertical markets being addressed." – Peter Richardson
