The global HLOS smartwatch witnessed a 2% YoY decline in quarterly shipments. Under HLOS, Huawei, Garmin, and Xiaomi experienced a YoY increase of 78%, 30%, and 107% respectively. Apple declined 20% YoY and Samsung also had a 2% decline in shipment units. By region, China continued to drive the growth of the HLOS smartwatch market, fueled by the Huawei GT 4, GT 3 series, and Watch 4 series along with the good performance of Apple S9.

Overview:
Global smartwatch shipments reached 43.3 million units, marking a 5% year-on-year increase in Q4 2023, and moderate growth of 5.8% was achieved on an annual basis.
By smartwatch device types, HLOS smartwatch shipments experienced a 6% year-on-year decrease, whereas Basic smartwatch saw a notable 31% year-on-year increase. This trend appears to be linked to the rise in the proportion of Basic smartwatch shipments, particularly in India and LATAM, which significantly contributed to the overall year-on-year growth in global smartwatch shipments during the fourth quarter of 2023.
By region, NAM recorded a 10% negative growth, with dominant OEMs such as Apple and Samsung underperforming. In addition, Europe and AP Others regions each showed slow performance compared to the previous year due to geographical risks and exchange rate hike.
On the other hand, the Indian market, driven by aggressive shipments from local brands, still recorded high YoY growth annually, but the growth rate is slowing. China also showed annual growth of 3% in 2023 due to strong shipments from Huawei and Imoo.

This trend appears to be linked to the rise in the proportion of basic smartwatch shipments, particularly in India and LATAM, which significantly contributed to the overall YoY growth in global smartwatch shipments during Q4 2023. Huawei experienced a remarkable YoY increase in shipments. A substantial portion of Huawei’s products is mostly shipped within the Chinese market. However, in Q4 2023, Huawei also recorded more than double-digit growth in the overseas market.

The global smartwatch market increased by 5% YoY. The expansion was mainly driven by Apple and Huawei, both introducing new models to boost their shipments. In contrast, Google observed a decline of 52% YoY, despite the launch of the Pixel 2 Watch. By region, India, LATAM, and China region shipments grew by 43%, 38%, and 24% respectively, compensating for declines in North America, Europe, and the rest of Asia.
