Overview:
- Smartphone sales and shipments both decline
- Global smartphone sales (sell-through) declined both month on month and year on year in April 2022. COVID waves and the consequent lockdowns are severely hurting consumer sentiment and demand in China. Rising inflation is also hurting demand in the lower price segments.
- Shipments (sell-in) also declined. While the component shortages are gradually easing, seasonality, high inventories and slow demand in China, and uncertainties in Eastern Europe all impacted the overall demand and hence shipments.
- Samsung reaches its highest global market share in five years, also becomes #1 in India; HONOR becomes #2 brand in China for the first time
- Samsung reached its highest monthly market share in five years, partly driven by the strong performance of the S22 series and the A-series. Samsung also had low exposure to the declining China market. Promotions in Latin America and growth in India to become the #1 brand also helped.
- HONOR surpassed Apple to become the #2 OEM in China for the first time. Although the China market has been on a decline, HONOR has been resilient and has outperformed the market.
- Premium segment declines, Samsung gains. US$300-US$599 price segment gains share
- The premium segment declined in April mostly due to seasonality. However, iPhone 13 continued to be the best-selling model globally, in the US as well as in China. Samsung gained share, as S22 Ultra became the third best-selling device in the >$800 price segment.
- The $300-$599 price segment gained share driven by the iPhone SE 2022, the first full month sales of A53 5G and the launch of A33 5G.

Overview:
Smartphone sales remain flat, China declines further, shipments above sales
- Global smartphone sales remained flat Month-on-Month (MoM) in March. Sales in China declined to their lowest level since February 2020 due to weak demand and lockdowns in several provinces. The MoM decline in China was somewhat offset by increased demand in India. Sales in the US also increased, driven by the first full month of sales of the Galaxy S22.
- Shipments (sell-in) improved MoM in March from a low base in February, however they remained lower than a year ago. Weak demand has led to an inventory build for OEMs, especially in China. Shipments in Eastern Europe also declined as several OEMs exited the Russian market and the Russia-Ukraine conflict created uncertainties. OEMs will find it incrementally harder to make sales in 2Q as channels face slowing demand and already have ample inventory.
Samsung becomes #1 smartphone brand in Q1 2022; Apple captures over two-third market share in Japan
- Samsung maintained its #1 position in March driven by a full month of sales of the Galaxy S22 series and the refresh of its A series portfolio. Samsung also regained its #1 position for the full quarter in Q1 2022. The S22 series started off better than the S21 series. However, towards the end of the month, the Game Optimization Service (GOS) issue hampered Samsung’s sales.
- Apple’s share declined in March as sales continue to soften due to seasonal decline and increased competition in the premium segment from the Galaxy S22 series. Apple launched the iPhone SE 2022 and initial sales were promising in Japan.. However, within US and China, the iPhone SE 2022 launch was lackluster
Samsung gains and Apple loses in the premium segment. S22 Ultra contributes over half of S22 series sales
- The premium segment held share as Samsung made gains, while Apple lost; much like a zero-sum game. This was driven by the first full month of S22 series sales.
- Our primary research surveys within the US showed that customers are attracted to the Note-like design, S pen, and the camera features of the S22 Ultra.

Overview:
Smartphone Market sales declines further in February, Shipments also fall below sales
- Global handset market sales declined further in February due to the usual seasonal slump across regions including the US and Europe. China slowed following the Lunar new year sales in January. India grew marginally MoM, from Omicron-affected sales in January.
- Shipments also declined sharply due to the closure of manufacturing activities because of the Lunar New Year holidays. The Russia-Ukraine conflict at the end of February created further uncertainties in the market. The full effect of the conflict on shipments and supply chain in the region is expected to be seen in March, and beyond
Samsung becomes #1 Smartphone Brand in February; Apple’s China sales surpass US in Feb
- Samsung regained the top position in the Global smartphone market in February 2022. This was driven by the release of the S22 series towards the end of the month, which recorded strong pre-orders.
- Apple sales declined as demand for the iPhone 13 series slowed due to seasonality. Sales were lower YoY as well, however this is mostly a function of strong sales in Feb-21 due to the later launch of the iPhone 12 series. Some consumers may also have been waiting for the new iPhone SE device launching in March 2022.
Premium segment declines, Samsung gains.
- The share of >US$600 devices declined in-line with seasonal trends for Apple. The S22 launched only during the latter part of February, which helped Samsung gain share in the segment.
- The S22 series is expected to perform better than the S21 series.. S22 Ultra, will encourage existing Note users to replace their devices thanks to the S Pen. The active installed base of Note users is estimated to be 40 Million at end 2021.
