Overview:
The AR/VR hype in China has gone through two waves of growth, despite the relatively small market size at present. The market and investment hype in China have waned and returned to a more rational level since the beginning of 2023. This can be attributed to the dismal profitability of internet giants under macroeconomic pressures and the underwhelming sales performance of VR devices. Nonetheless, China's national government has recognized the long-term potential of XR technologies, with the XR industry prioritized as one of the top seven key industries to constitute the digital economy of China in the country's 14th Five-Year Plan. Recently, CAICT (China Academy of Information and Communications Technology) has also introduced Action plans to foster the integration of virtual reality technologies (including augmented reality and mixed reality technologies) and vertical applications from 2022 to 2026.
This report analyzes the evolution of AR/VR technologies and the primary suppliers in China. It covers various aspects such as SoC (System on Chip), optical and display solutions, sensing and interaction technologies, and ODM/EMS, among others. Additionally, the report highlights some of the most significant AR/VR use cases in both China's consumer and enterprise sectors.

Overview:
Extended reality (XR) headset shipments declined by 9% from 10.8 million units in 2021 to 9.8 million units in 2022, according to the latest Counterpoint Global XR (VR & AR) Market Forecast. After an overhyped 2021, VR/AR stocks also faced a tough 2022, exacerbated by global economic uncertainties. This can be seen in S&P’s Kensho VR Index, which shows a -46.73% yearly return. However, the quest to bring game-changing VR devices and applications, as crucial portals to the metaverse at large, continues.
Despite early success with Meta’s Quest 2 headset, the VR industry is yet to see mass adoption. This will require significant technological advancement (hardware as well as software), building of a self-contained ecosystem, more and better content and games, and greater interest from more global players, which can happen with the business model becoming sustainable rather than running on subsidies. In August 2021, China’s social media giant Bytedance (TikTok parent) acquired local XR firm Pico, heating up the competition in XR.
This report aims to:
- Investigate Pico and Meta’s latest VR solutions as cornerstones to their differentiated metaverse strategies.
- Compare them in terms of technical specifications, product positioning and primary markets.
- Analyze the ongoing challenges and opportunities of the VR industry in 2023.

VR standalone form factor captured 90% of the total XR market shipments in Q2 2022 as compared to 80% in Q2 2021. AR Tethered form factor’s quarterly growth was supported by a 22% increase in Nreal’s shipments. Meta continued to dominate an XR market and Pico retained its second spot for two successive quarters.
