Overview:
The MEA handset market retreated marginally Year-on-Year (YoY). New launches in Q4 2021, a boost from Ramadan sales that started towards the end of the quarter, and accelerating digitalization cushioned the MEA handset market in Q1 2022 against macroeconomic headwinds.
Smartphone shipments to MEA grew 6% YoY, which nearly offset the YoY decline in feature phone shipments. Despite the short-term headwinds, the smartphone market is poised to grow further in the long term as more consumers transition from feature phones to smartphones, driven by the need to participate in a growing digital economy, especially in Africa.
