As the IoT ecosystem continues to expand, security cannot be neglected. This is especially true for devices that gather and store personal data. And while securing every computing system is almost impossible, service providers need to add a layer of security to thwart most attacks. There are four layers of security – hardware, software, network and cloud. But what challenges do companies face during deployment?
In this episode of “The Counterpoint Podcast” host and VP of Research, Peter Richardson and Research Analyst Satyajit Sinha discuss “The Future of IoT Security” with our guest, Kumi Thiruchelvam, CCO, Crypto Quantique. The discussion isn’t just limited to IoT Security, but we’ve also touched upon topics like Quantum Tunneling.

5G has been in the works for over a decade now, and with OEMs releasing their 5G phones, cellular operators have started deploying their networks too. The USA, in particular, is one of the early adopters of 5G. The service is now offered by all major carriers in select cities and regions. When talking about the growth, we expect 5G to grow faster than 4G. This is something that we also discussed in our previous podcast.
In the latest episode of “The Counterpoint Podcast”, host Ritesh Bendre and Research Director Jeff Fieldhack discuss the current state of 5G in the USA. We have covered a wide range of topics from operators to average download speeds, and carrier dynamics. In addition, we also share our views on sales of current 5G phones, and our shipment expectations for 2020, especially in light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The auto industry has been feeling the heat for quite some time now, mostly due to the denting sales and falling demand. And as the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak worsens, automakers have been impacted even more. Auto shows, mainly, the Geneva Motor Show, where automakers launch their upcoming cars, has been canceled.
Besides, dependence on China for components manufacturing and assembling has exposed weakness for the auto industry. And adding to that, lockdown in countries like China, Italy among others has also decreased the footfall for car showrooms. Although, dealers and carmakers are looking for alternatives like augmented reality and virtual product launches to keep the show going.
The sensor-driven Intelligent IoT Era is powering different applications from smart buildings to smart factories to smart cities. However, the crux is to analyze the data collected from the sensors, and visualize it. Further, visualization with location-as-a-context becomes more important to help augment the data and insights in space across a digital representation of the asset. This is termed as a “Digital Twin” which is a visual and virtual representation/model of the physical asset overlayed with the digital data. The rise of Digital Twins has accelerated the need for tools and companies to help build the 3D visualization embodying real-time location-centric intelligence in 3D space.
As a result, this Spatial intelligence sector is poised to see rapid growth and development over the next five years and beyond. Counterpoint analysts have deep-dived into this emerging technology trend and analyzed the key companies and key capabilities which will drive this 3D Visualization or Spatial Intelligence trend. “The Counterpoint Podcast” host Ritesh Bendre and Senior Analyst and the author of the research, “Spatial Intelligence Platforms: Making Digital Twins Using Real-Time 3D Simulations “, discuss the emerging trends, applications, competitive landscape, and opportunities in the Spatial Intelligence segment.

The fifth generation of wireless technology, 5G, is finally here. An upgrade over 4G, 5G promises to offer higher throughputs, wider bandwidths, greater capacities and lower latencies with future 3GPP Releases. Leading cellular operators have started deploying 5G NR Non-Standalone (NSA) networks, though the coverage is bound to ramp up this year. At Counterpoint, we are estimating 5G to grow faster than 4G in terms of device availability and costs as well as operator-side deployments.
However, with plethora of new opportunities 5G brings to the fore, there are a few challenges which the mobile industry and the value chain are facing. To discuss more about the current state of 5G, opportunities and challenges, our VP, Research, Peter Richardson has shared insights and his views in our podcast below:

The COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus or nCoV) outbreak can derail the plans of Chinese smartphone makers as the lockdown to contain the virus continues. We expect China smartphone sales to drop over 20% in Q1 2020. The impact of nCoV could be much severe than one would expect.
Smartphone vendors heavily rely on components from China, and with the lockdown, the supply chain has been affected too. In this podcast, we discuss the impact of Coronavirus on the smartphone industry. We have covered topics such as the challenges faced by smartphone makers, the companies that will be affected the most, and our revised sales figures for 2020.
Our Research Director Tom Kang shares his views on the effects of Coronavirus on China Smartphone Sales.
