Global Smartphone Weekly (W14–W20) Demand Stalled Despite Promotions, While Memory Shortage Widened Brand Performance Gaps

June 12, 2026
  • Apple, Samsung, and Huawei showed relatively strong performance, while Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo underperformed due to cost pressure and weaker pricing flexibility.
  • Despite seasonal promotions, demand recovery remained limited in W19–W20.
  • Global market continued to decline YoY as memory shortage pushed up costs and led to reduced promotional activity.

Supply Chain Strength Drives Clear Brand Divergence

Based on the Global Weekly Smartphone Tracker, W20 highlighted a clear divergence in brand performance across the global smartphone market.

Apple recorded 10% YoY growth, while Samsung remained broadly stable. Huawei delivered strong growth of around 25% YoY in China, supported by solid domestic demand and continued localization of its supply chain, despite weakness in overseas markets. This performance gap was largely driven by differences in supply chain resilience, particularly in memory procurement and cost management. Brands with better component visibility were able to maintain more stable pricing and promotional strategies, even in a cost-inflation environment.

In contrast, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo faced greater exposure to memory-related cost pressure and supply volatility. This limited their ability to execute aggressive pricing or sustain promotional intensity, resulting in relatively weaker performance.

2026 May(W19–W20): Temporary WoW Recovery in India, But YoY Weakness Persisted Across Markets

During W19–W20, global smartphone demand typically benefits from India’s Summer Promotion and China’s Labor Day holiday period. However, this year the expected recovery did not materialize, and the market remained weak overall.

In India, sales increased by 26% compared to W17–W18, supported by seasonal promotional activities and retail discounts. However, despite this WoW improvement, volumes still declined YoY, indicating that the recovery was not strong enough to offset broader market weakness.

China recorded a sharper 17% YoY decline, as weak consumer sentiment and early wait and-see behavior ahead of the 6.18 shopping season continued to limit short-term demand recovery.

Even with multiple events running in parallel, consumer purchase delays and stronger promotion expectations prevented uplift in global sales.

Note: India’s Summer Promotion season began in early May 2026, with promotional activities led by major online retail platforms, including Amazon India.

2026 April (W14–W18): Structural YoY Decline Driven By Memory Shortage

In April 2026, the global smartphone market entered a clear contraction phase. Rising memory costs increased overall bill of materials pressure, making it difficult for OEMs to maintain pricing competitiveness. As a result, several brands reduced promotional intensity, while selective price increases were observed, especially in the Android mid-to-low segment.

By week, W14–W18 saw a continued YoY decline in the global market. India recorded a sharp YoY drop in cumulative shipments during this period, driven by higher handset prices as well as demand deferral ahead of the summer sales season.

Overall, the combination of cost inflation and weak demand sentiment established a structural downtrend that persisted into May, despite seasonal promotional events.
