Qualcomm - Uniquely Positioned to be a Full Stack AI Solutions Company for Datacenters to Devices

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon delivered a strong keynote at Qualcomm's Investor Day, building a compelling vision and narrative of industry shifts towards Agentic AI and the need for a player that can deliver end-to-end solutions, from datacenters to devices, seamlessly.

The biggest announcement in this diversification strategy was how Qualcomm will provide value and capture it in the trillion-dollar AI Datacenter market.

After years of contemplation, flip-flop focus to enter AI datacenter in a big way, Qualcomm, over the last two years or so, has tried to add missing pieces to its portfolio and capabilities to become a "full stack" AI datacenter solutions provider. If you are not a full-stack provider difficult to compete against the incumbents.

Qualcomm's new GM & EVP of Datacenter business Tony Pialis (ex- Alphawave Semi CEO) took the stage to lay out what the company has been doing in the last few months to bring together all the building blocks to transform Qualcomm into a serious AI datacenter solutions provider with a purpose-built modular solution portfolio to address every possible need of every possible hyperscalar.

1. CPU:

NUVIA Inc brings in Arm-based but world-class differentiated Oryon CPU, which now scales from smartphones, PCs, Automotive, to Datacenters. Qualcomm announced the C1000 CPU for Agentic AI datacenters featuring industry's first >5GHz clock speeds, 250+ core counts and more with Meta as the first hyperscalars of many in future to deploy at GW scale infrastructure based on multi-generations of Qualcomm CPUs - potentially from head node to standalone starting FY2029.

2. AI Accelerators & Custom Silicon:

Qualcomm, with its three generations of AI Accelerator solutions (AI 100/200/250 and AI 300 in the future), mostly NPU-based, has covered some ground in Sovereign applications with clients such as HUMAIN.

However, the market and demand available in the AI satacenter market is quite different than other markets Qualcomm operates in. This will require Qualcomm to scale its expertise beyond merchant silicon to offer custom silicon solutions to potential customers who are building heterogeneous AI infrastructure. Great to see Qualcomm has already won two marquee hyperscalars for these ones and is talking to many right now.

3. Memory Wall:

Qualcomm has taken a very unique approach to building a proprietary memory-compute architecture to enable near memory compute called High Bandwidth Compute (HBC) as an alternative to High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) to stack DRAMs on top of the XPUs without the need for complex advanced 2.5D packaging to deliver much better performance-per-watt & tokens-per-dollar. Look forward to real-world results on how this fares and scales, but it sounds quite promising. It would be a task to convince the memory vendors to get on board for this as Qualcomm will control most of the go-to-market for this packaged solution. Microsoft Satya Nadella is super excited about HBC to help manage tokenomics.

4. Software Stack:

The Modular acquisition yesterday fills the important gap to compete with other proprietary stacks out there with an open and "modern" software approach to optimize any workloads, any model on any silicon, extensible from datacenters to devices. Also brings in the legendary team of Chris Lattner and Tim Davis directly working with Cristiano R. Amon to scale the platform across Qualcomm's portfolio from Dragonfly, Snapdragon, to Dragonwing.

5. Interconnect & Networking:

Alphawave Semi brings in a ton of IP in the interconnect and networking portfolio from SerDes to Silicon Photonics. They also bring a seasoned leader in Tony Pialis with his vast experience and leadership, industry network, revenue, and rolodex of customers to build a burgeoning datacenter business.

In the end, Qualcomm completes its Datacenter portfolio with multiple astute acquisitions.

Qualcomm's CFO, Akash Palkhiwala, laid out a strong financial framework for the datacenter business, projecting revenue and customer pipeline growth from almost zero to $15 Billion by FY29, with significant upside.

Akash also highlighted the progress of the company's diversification efforts, where the non-handset business will surpass the handset business by FY2029. Also, great progress for Nakul Duggal's leadership in Automotive and a strong foundation for IoT and Physical AI. The automotive pipeline swells to $65 Billionwith $10B ARR through FY29 and on track to become the largest "Automotive Semi" company.
