Automotive CID/DIC Display Demand Falls 2% YoY in Q1 2026; Shift to LTPS Accelerates

  • Demand for automotive displays, including Center Information Displays (CIDs) and Digital Instrument Clusters (DICs), fell 2% YoY in Q1 2026, signaling softness. The QoQ decline reached 15%, although this drop was amplified by strong seasonal demand in Q4 2025.
  • The LCD share of demand edged down from 99.1% in Q1 2024 to 98.7% in Q1 2026. Over the same period, MiniLED LCD rose from 0.5% to 0.6% and OLED from 0.4% to 0.7%, maintaining a slow but steady upward trend.
  • LTPS share climbed from 11% in Q1 2024 to 18.8% in Q1 2026, driven by growing display sizes and the resulting demand for higher resolutions and lower power consumption.

Automotive CID/DIC (Center Information Display/Digital Instrument Cluster) demand declined 2% YoY in Q1 2026, according to Counterpoint Research’s Quarterly Automotive Display Tracker - CID and DIC, Q2 2026. The sequential decline was steeper at 15% QoQ, driven by strong seasonal demand in Q4 2025. The underlying weakness stems from a broader automotive market slowdown, led primarily by Chinese OEMs, most notably the BYD and Changan groups.

The technology mix has not shifted significantly. LCD continues to be overwhelmingly dominant at 98.7% of demand in Q1 2026, down slightly from 99.1% in Q1 2024. Over the same period, MiniLED LCD's share rose from 0.5% to 0.6% and OLED's from 0.4% to 0.7%. While there are only a few models adopting these premium technologies, the trend shows a steady increase driven by new interiors designed to highlight the displays.

A more noticeable shift can be seen on the backplane side. LTPS accounted for 18.8% of demand in Q1 2026, up from 11% in Q1 2024. Behind this increase is display size migration – the sub-10-inch segment's share of demand contracted from 46% to 35% over the period, while the 10-20-inch segment expanded from 54% to 65%. Larger displays translate directly into higher resolution and image-quality requirements, and within the 10-20-inch segment itself, LTPS share rose from 20% to 28%.

While volumes have entered a near-term adjustment phase, the mix upgrade – defined by growing display sizes and the migration to LTPS – remains firmly on track.

Associate Director Guillaume Chansin said, “Carmakers want LCD panels with LTPS because it enables higher resolutions, slim bezels and lower power consumption – the same characteristics widely found in consumer electronics. With OLED technology now dominating in smartphones and gaining market share in IT, spare capacity in LTPS LCD has been redirected towards automotive.”
