Some quick observations from the smartphone market:

  • Global smartphone shipments declined the fastest ever 13% YoY reaching 294.9 million units in Q1 2020 .
  • This is the first time since Q1 2014, that the smartphone market has fallen below 300 million units in a quarter.
  • All the regions (APAC, LATAM, Europe and North America) registered decline during the quarter. However, few countries like India (5% YoY) and Russia (8% YoY), grew.
  • China, being the initial epicentre of the pandemic, registered one of the steepest decline (-26% YoY) during the quarter
  • Apple remained resilient even during the COVID-19 as iPhone shipments declined only 5% YoY Q1 2020
  • Huawei surpassed Apple again during the quarter. Over half of smartphone shipments for Huawei are now in China.
  • Xiaomi (7% YoY), and realme (157% YoY) were the only major brands to achieve growth. The expansion in markets outside China for both the brands has paid off
  • Samsung declined 19% YoY during the quarter. With, low presence in China and most of its market hit by COVID-19, the OEM is likely to decline steeper in Q2 2020
  • The share of 5G smartphones increased to over 7% in Q1 2020, compared to 1% in Q4 2019. 5G is likely to help the rate of recovery during the second half of 2020.

Some quick observations from the feature phone market:

  • Global feature phone shipments declined 12% annually reaching  83.5 million units in Q4 2019.
  • Feature phone shipments in MEA grew 9% YoY capturing over 41% of the global feature phone shipments.
  • Transsion Group led the global feature phone market capturing over 30% of market share.
  • Alcatel and DORO continue to do well in the US, driven by KaiOS based GoFlip and 7050.

  • Global smartphone shipments grew 2% YoY reaching 401.1 million units in Q4 2019.
  • MEA (14% YoY) grew the highest, followed by India (12% YoY).
  • World's largest smartphone market, China, declined 10% YoY. This was its 8th consecutive quarterly decline.
  • After two years, Apple gained the top spot in the global smartphone market. Shipments for Apple grew 10% YoY even without a 5G variant.
  • Huawei* registered a decline (6% YoY) for the first time after 2017 Q4.  The aggressive shipments in China, where it grew 12% YoY, was unable to offset the global decline in all the other regions.
  • Xiaomi grew 28% YoY even though it declined 17% YoY in China. The overseas expansion over the last few years has made it less dependent on its home market.
  • Vivo surpassed OPPO for the first time since 2015 Q2, to become the 5th largest brand in 2019 Q4. OPPO slipped out of the top 5.
  • Samsung's growth slowed down to 1% YoY during the quarter.

  • Global feature phone shipments declined 12% annually reaching  105.5 million units in Q4 2019.
  • MEA captured over 38% of the global feature phone market. Feature phone shipments in MEA grew 10% YoY during the quarter.
  • Transsion Group led the global feature phone market capturing over 29% of the market share.
  • Alcatel led the feature phone market in North America driven by the GoFlip series.
  • KaiOS continued to expand into Africa and entered the Pakistan market as well by launching the cheapest smart feature phone globally (11 USD).

  • India smartphone shipments reached a record high 49Mn units during the quarter.
  • Huawei grew 28% YoY capturing close to 40% market share in China. Over 60% of Huawei's shipment in the quarter were from China.
  • Samsung led the market growing 8% YoY with a strong demand of A and Note series. Huawei’s loss in the overseas market would be a big opportunity for Samsung in coming quarters.
  • Samsung continues to lead the 5G devices market with its flagship Samsung S10 and Note 10 series 5G variants.
  • Apple iPhone shipments fell 4%, and iPhone revenues fell 11% year-on-year. The positive response for the latest iPhone 11 series during the tail end of the quarter is a silver lining for Apple.
  • Global smartphone market consolidated further with top 10 brands capturing 83% of the total market as compared to 73% a year ago.

Some quick observations from the feature phone market:

  • Global feature phone shipments declined 21% annually reaching 88 million units in Q3 2019.
  • Over 65% of the total feature phone market is captured by MEA and India.
  • Although a developed market, feature phone shipments in the North American region increased 58% YoY. The increase was due to strong sell-in of KaiOS based Alcatel Go Flip and Doro 7050.
  • iTel continued to remain the top feature phone player for the second quarter in a row.
  • Multilaser became the top feature phone player in the Central and Latin American market. The OEM launched the Multilaser ZAPP with KaiOS in Brazil.
  • Jio slipped out of the top 5 feature phone players as Jio Phone shipments declined 93% YoY on account of high inventory.
  • The Smart Feature Phone segment scaled less than expected in Africa. However, KaiOS continues to expand in the region with a series of new launches.

  • Apple iPhone shipments fell 11%, and iPhone revenues fell 12% year-on-year. It slipped out of top 5 in the MEA market. However, the sales trends for Apple are improving.
  • Samsung led the 5G devices market with its flagship Samsung S10 5G, which remains popular in the 5G adopting countries like Korea.
  • BBK Group (OPPO, Vivo, Realme, and OnePlus) is now the second-largest smartphone manufacturer globally. Realme entered the top 10 OEMs list globally for the first time.

Some quick observations from the Feature phone market:

  • Global feature phone shipments declined 23% annually reaching  86 million units in Q2 2019.
  • Over one third of the global feature phone market was captured by MEA followed by India. Together they captured 65% of the total feature phone market.
  • The shipments for smart feature phones in Africa are increasing with launch of KaiOS powered devices with Orange and MTN.
  • Jio continued to decline steeply at 64% YoY due to inventory build up.
  • iTel surpassed HMD to capture the top spot in the feature phone segment in Q2 2019.
  • Sonim with its rugged feature phones and Doro with its KaiOS based feature phones continue to do well in their respective markets.

  • Increasing ASP, long holding periods, declining value proposition and US-China trade war led Apple shipments to decline 20% YoY.
  • BBK Group (which owns OPPO, Realme, vivo and OnePlus brands) is collectively the world’s third largest manufacturer. All its brands registered growth during the quarter.
  • Apple captured 33% share of overall smartphone revenue down from a 38% share in 2018 Q1. Overall smartphone market ASP remained flat annually and declined 8% sequentially.

  • Middle East and Africa have surpassed India to become the largest feature phone market. It contributed to one-third of the total feature phone shipments in 2019Q1.

  • Shipments for Jio declined 59% YoY due to inventory build-up. Jio drove the India feature phone market decline (52% YoY) in Q1 2019.
  • HMD captured the top spot in the feature phone segment in Q1 2019.
