The India smartphone market closed 2023 on a good note with 31% YoY growth in December 2023. Xiaomi led the India smartphone market for the second consecutive month with 20% share in December 2023, it refreshed its portfolio with the launch of Redmi Note 13 and Redmi 13C series. Although vivo was placed second with 19% share overall, it emerged as the top brand on the offline channel with 24% share in Dec 2023.Online channel could only secure 41% of the overall India smartphone shipments, with Xiaomi as the leader in December 2023. Online channel share is decreasing due to OEMs expansion in offline driven by consumers’ preference. Samsung was in the second spot for both offline channel and online channel shipments in December 2023 with 19% and 12% share respectively, indicating its focus on the dual channel strategy.

Overview:

The India smartphone market experienced a 30% YoY growth in Nov 2023, this month also marked the end of festive season sales in India. Xiaomi led the India smartphone market just for the second time in 2023 with 20% share in Nov 2023, it also featured 3 smartphones in the top 5 best-shipped smartphone list. Samsung was close behind in the second spot with 19% share driven by its budget Galaxy A04 and Galaxy A05 series. In Q3 2023, the global foundry industry witnessed a clear hierarchy in market share. TSMC dominated the landscape with an impressive 59% market share driven by N3 ramp-up and smartphone restocking demand. At the second position was Samsung Foundry with a 13% share. UMC, GlobalFoundries and SMIC had similar market shares with each contributing around 6%. TSMC’s significant lead underscored its technological prowess and market leadership, setting the tone for the industry’s trajectory in Q3 2023. However, some mature node foundries such as UMC started to face headwinds in Q3 2023 due to muted LDDIC and PMIC demand.

In Q3 2023, the market was prominently led by the 5/4nm segment, which had a 23% share. This dominance resulted from strong demand, particularly from AI and iPhone. The 7/6nm segment’s market share remained steady, showing early signs of order recovery in the smartphone market. MediaTek dominated the smartphone SoC market in Q3 2023 with a share of 33%. MediaTek’s shipments increased in Q3 2023 as the inventory levels came down. New smartphone launches in the low- and mid-end segments have increased the shipments in the Dimensity 7000 series. MediaTek also refreshed the Dimensity 9300 with Gen AI capabilities. Qualcomm captured a 28% share during the quarter. Qualcomm’s shipments increased sequentially in Q3 2023 due to the high shipments for the Snapdragon 695 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipsets. Also, key design wins for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Samsung Galaxy Fold/Flip series contributed to this growth.

Global Smartphone AP Share by Revenue

Qualcomm dominated the AP market in Q3 2023 with a 40% revenue share. The premium segment drove the brand’s growth due to the adoption of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in Samsung’s flagship smartphones and by Chinese OEMs. Apple had a 31% share in the AP SoC market in Q3 2023 in terms of revenue. Apple’s share increased by 23% QoQ due to the launch of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series. MediaTek captured the third position with a share of 15% in the total global smartphone AP/SoC revenues. MediaTek’s revenue increased QoQ in Q3 2023 as the inventory levels came down while the competition in the entry-level 5G segment continued to grow.

India Smartphone Monthly Model Tracker 2023 Oct (Online Channels)

Overview:

The India smartphone market grew by 16% YoY in Oct 2023, driven by the elongated Festive season sale which started early during the month. 5G smartphone models were one of the major talking points for OEMs during the sale, resulting in 5G shipments rising 2X YoY in Oct 2023. Apple and vivo were the leading 5G brands during the month.  Samsung led the India smartphone market with 16.4% share in Oct 2023, driven by its increasing focus on the premium segment. vivo was at a close second spot with 16.1% share driven by its T series and the new V series models. The online share in Oct 2023 was at 49% with Xiaomi leading brand on the channel followed by Apple. ‘Big Billion Day’ and ‘The Great India Festival’ hosted by Flipkart and Amazon were the major attractions during the month.
