Overview:
Retail inflation or the Consumer Price Index-based inflation has caused much media attention lately. In much of the developed world, the inflation rate is at an all-time high in decades. The global mobile handset market reflects this broader story. Component prices increased in 2021 due to factory shutdowns, new COVID-19 variants and supply-demand imbalances. Despite these pricing trends, the picture is slightly more nuanced. While global macroeconomic trends matter, secular demand and supply factors within the smartphone and neighboring industries still play an important role. Regional variances are also worth consideration as the extent of inflationary pressure will be felt differently in distant parts of the world.
