"MmWave is needed to deliver a true 5G experience. However, integrating mmWave capability is inherently complex. Qualcomm is the only supplier with a proven solution and it is now rolling out second generation mmWave antenna modules. However, Apple is looking to be less dependent on Qualcomm by integrating its own mmWave antenna. This has been in development for a couple of years. TSMC has been chosen to produce the mmWave modules in a more expensive, but space-saving module packaging technique, InFO_AiP compared to Flip Chip FC_AIP. Apple will likely have three modules within the new 5G mmWave capable iPhones. Though, it is still not clear if Apple will go 100% with its own 5G mmWave module. It will likely test its own solution with Qualcomm’s in various configurations before coming to a final resolution." – Neil Shah
