"SiC is a rare material with excellent properties for power conversion and control which enhances energy efficiency and reduces weight and volume. SiC's electrical (lower impedance/higher frequency), mechanical (smaller size), and thermal properties (higher temperature operation) are also suitable for manufacturing high-power automotive electronics such as car chargers, buck converters, and main drive inverters. SiC can increase an inverter's efficiency by 3%–5% and reduce battery cost/capacity required which is key for high-performance EVs. Key players like Cree, STMicroelectronics, Infineon, Rohm etc. have invested to reduce wafer shortages and increase price reductions. However, SiC and Si have different switching characteristics, power consumption and cost and will co-exist in the future." – Parv Sharma
