"The European Commission (EC) has set out its plans to implement new information and safety systems for vehicles based on a standard called ITS-G5, which is related to the 802.11 WiFi standards. The GSMA has thrown up its hands in horror because it fully expected that cars would implement cellular-V2X technology based on LTE and then 5G. However, C-V2X standards based on 4G and 5G are not yet ready for the prime time. In the interim, the EC has come down in favour of the boring but mature ITS-G5 standard that has been developed with ETSI for many years. Despite being related to WiFi, it is a capable technology and is optimised for vehicle use. And in the longer term, as 4G and 5G C-V2X standards mature, they too will be incorporated into traffic management and driver information systems, but it may take until the mid-2020s before this occurs." – Peter Richardson
