"Didi is planning to continue expanding its geographic coverage, entering Chile, Peru and Colombia. It will first enter Chile. Didi is already recruiting in Chile, but it doesn’t have a country manager and neither does it have a launch date. Chile would be the third country in the LATAM region to have Didi’s presence. In January 2018, it spent, US$1 billion purchasing “significant majority of stakes” of 99, the biggest taxi-hailing app in Brazil. In December 2018, Didi launched operations in Mexico.
LATAM’s ride-hailing business is growing, but it is also facing increasing opposition from the local taxi operators and lawmakers. In the case of Chile, Didi is entering the market quite late. Uber entered Chile five years ago, and there are already two other players in a market that has a population of only 19 million. Didi is looking for international growth, but we are not sure whether it would be worth fighting already established players in Chile." – Tina Lu
