NITI Aayog Gives Short Notice to EV Industry for Electric Transition Roadmap

"Two and three-wheeler companies in India have been urged to share their EV transition plans with government think tank NITI Aayog within two weeks. NITI Aayog is a body that suggests long-term policy measures to the Indian government. The development comes nearly a fortnight after NITI Aayog had proposed full electric transition for three-wheelers by 2023 and two-wheelers with an engine capacity less than 150 CC by 2025. With 14 of 15 most-polluted cities being in India, this is a welcome step moreover, without a proper policy road map, the transition to EVs under the targeted timeline will not be possible. The transition will not only help check pollution but would also reduce consumer spends on fuel and reduce the dependence of Indian economy on crude oil imports. Starting with two-wheelers will help build infrastructure like a robust network of charging stations, which will further pave the way for four-wheeler EVs in the future. However, there is strong government and industry push required to build proper infrastructure. It will also help the country acquire specialized tech and human resource needed to build this industry and provide power and range comparable to traditional combustion engines." - Varun Mishra
