Insights on the global smartphone market in May 2023:
Global smartphone sales declined 1% Month-on-Month (MoM) in May, as most regions continued their seasonal slide. Global consumer demand remains weak, with all major markets recording Year-on-Year (YoY) declines. China, LATAM and Japan were the only markets to record MoM sales growth in May, driven by seasonal promotions.
Among key OEMs, Samsung continued to lead the market in May as well, despite a MoM sales decline. Apple’s global sales remained relatively stable declining marginally MoM in May on normal seasonal weakness. Global sales for most Chinese OEMs grew MoM in May as the “618” sales event in China started earlier than usual.
Global smartphone sales declined MoM across most price bands in May, as most regions saw seasonal declines, except China, LATAM and Japan. The $200-$299 and $600-$799 price bands were the only pricebands to record MoM sales growth in May. The premium segment (≥$600) maintained share in May, as Apple’s gains in the US, China and Japan markets were offset by declines in other regions.
