MOBILE DEVICES MONITOR – Q2 2015: Android Giants Stung by Swarming Local Players

The global mobile phone industry shipped 462 million units’ mobile phones in Q2 2015, a growth of 4.8% annually. Shipments increased double digit in some regions, Middle East Africa continued as a fastest growing mobile phone region while other region like Latin America, Europe shown decline in shipment. More than half of the global shipment was driven by Asian region while more than one third of the shipment contributed by India and China together.

Smartphone remained the key driver for growth and represented around 76% from the total handset shipments. The smartphone segment grew 13% (Y/Y) reaching 350 million shipments in Q2 2015. Shipment also grew 2% sequentially. Except for Asia and Europe, the remaining global regions all grew with double digit rates. China’s smartphone market remained flat Y/Y but increased 5% sequentially as smartphone shipments reached 108 million units during the quarter. China contributed 31% of the total smartphone shipments on a global basis and is greater in size than Europe and North America combined.

LTE was the fastest growing technology segment as the total demand more than doubled compared to last year reaching just shy of 200 million units in a quarter. LTE is the number one cellular access technology surpassing WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA as well as broader but shrinking 2G GSM segment. One in three phones or one in two smartphones shipped globally is now LTE capable. China & US were the biggest markets driving LTE shipment volumes with a combined share of almost 65% of the total LTE phones shipped globally. The next growth for LTE will come from Europe this year, Latin America, India and parts of Asia in following years.
