LTE Technology Outlook for Latin America

LTE in LAC (Latin America & Caribbean) is still in its Infancy. Up to November 2013, only 25 commercial networks were rolled out in 12 countries: Antigua & Barbuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Virgin Islands, and Venezuela.

The trade body, 4G Americas has announced that in May 2013 there were around 134,000 LTE subscribers in LAC, though Brazil had 78% of them. This trend will likely remain the same through 2014. 

The other issue that affect the deployment of LTE  in LAC, is that most of the network optimization and building budget is being utilized to rollout HSPA+ networks, which have recently been launched (chart LTE 1). HSPA is built on existing 3G network so is quite mature.  HSPA+ has just been launched (2012-2013) in most LAC countries, with coverage still limited...
