"The company plans to launch robo-taxis in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen by 2020 and outside of China by 2021. Cabs travel long distances and can become useful sources of data for autonomous vehicles (AV). Ride-hailing companies like Didi can also considerably reduce trip costs with AVs in the long run. Didi accounts for 90% share in Chinese ride-hailing market and has the potential to account for a considerable share in vehicle sales and the global AV market. The company is recently becoming aggressive in the AV market. In 2018, Didi formed a partnership with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance to procure electric autonomous vehicles. In 2019, Toyota invested US$ 600 million in Didi and formed a JV to develop connected vehicles and EVs in China. The company is also in talks with SoftBank to raise funding for its autonomous driving unit, which became an independent company this year." - Aman Madhok
