Automotive industry is in the midst of heavy debate about whether Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or Autonomous Navigation is the way forward. Unsurprisingly, we expect traditional automotive incumbents to favour the incremental approach with progressive development of ADAS functionality toward ultimately achieving autonomous navigation.
This report examines various competing forces at play within the context of the self-driving capability and technologies. Specifically, we focus on location and range sensing technologies, mapping, and deep learning. This report also provides a quick update on recent developments, including a newly formed 3-way partnership among BMW, Intel and Mobileye.
In follow-on reports we will reuse the navigation system framework provided here to analyse supplier relationships and investment implications.
