Overview:
The global smartphone market declined 12% QoQ and 8% YoY in Q1 2022 to reach 326 million units. Although the component shortages are gradually easing, other factors like seasonality, high inventories, slow demand in China due to lockdowns, uncertainties in eastern Europe and OEMs exiting Russia amid the Ukraine crisis led to the decline. Samsung surpassed Apple to take the number one spot by shipping 74 million units in Q1 2022, down 3% YoY but up 8% QoQ. The growth was driven by its S22 and A-series smartphones in the premium and mid-tier segments, respectively. Samsung’s market share grew in APAC and North America. China’s smartphone shipments fell 12% QoQ and 19% YoY to reach 74 million units due to the reduced demand caused by the new COVID-19 wave and consequent lockdowns. While most of the other brands declined, HONOR’s shipments in China grew 190% YoY in Q1 2022. India’s smartphone shipments declined 13% QoQ and 1% YoY in Q1 2022 to reach 39 million units. 5G smartphone shipments increased 16% YoY led by Apple. The top five brands contributed ~81% of the total 5G smartphone shipments in Q1 2022.
