Overview:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was rise in interest in XR. The Quest 2 headset, launched in October 2020, became a wild success by the standards of XR sales. The following year, Facebook, the maker of the Quest series of headsets, rebranded itself as Meta, giving credence to the idea that the metaverse, which is best experienced in XR, was fast moving into the mainstream. However, by the following year, fewer-than-expected headsets were launched with limited content availability. The launch of ChatGPT made augmented reality (AR) the new area of focus in the tech world, taking attention – and arguably investment – away from XR. In this short report, we explore how the rise of AI might in fact play a role in the growth of XR.
