Counterpoint analysts were on the ground at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2026 event, which the organisers now describe as "the world's largest spatial computing event." The event made one thing clear: smart glasses aren't going anywhere, anytime soon. The AI smart glasses have now evolved from being experimental gadgets into a more serious computing platform. The event saw key announcements from Qualcomm, Snap Inc., and XREAL, among others. Google also showcased Android XR's growing ecosystem with increasingly capable AI experiences powered by Gemini.

Here are the key announcements and highlights from the event, and what it all means.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Reality Elite SoC, New START Program

  • Qualcomm’s Ziad Asghar, SVP and General Manager for XR and Wearables, unveiled the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform for XR during his "Era of personal AI" keynote.
  • The chipset underscores how much of this category runs on Snapdragon: Snap Specs, XREAL Aura, Meta Ray-Bans, RayNeo, and more.
  • Key highlights include 48 TOPS on-device LLM & LVM support, over 60% faster GPU, 30% faster CPU and over 160% faster NPU, all while ensuring 20% longer battery life, compared to the Snapdragon XR2 platform.
  • Qualcomm's silicon layer is doing the heavy lifting in the background, enabling the XR market's fast-paced innovation.
  • Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon START program to accelerate AI Smart Glasses design and ecosystem.
  • It is basically a toolkit for brands to design and scale AI smart glasses, with plans to expand to other form factors later this year.

XREAL Aura

Google / Android XR

  • Continues to solidify as a key platform layer with an OS and AI assistant that billions of people are already familiar with, breaking down barriers to mass adoption.

The most interesting story isn't any single headset or tech layer; it’s the stack finally lining up. Silicon, optics, operating systems, and AI are maturing in parallel to create an incredible user experience, and it will only improve from here. This intersection of maturing technology is what turns a cool demo of a "prosumer" product into a thriving mainstream category.
