Apple Unveils Long-Awaited AI Advancements at WWDC 2026 Led by New Siri Experience
Apple held its annual worldwide developers conference, Apple WWDC 2026, on June 8th at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Before giving key takeaways, it is important to remember what the key announcements were last year:
- Developers were given access to an offline 3-billion-parameter LLM.
- Liquid glass was introduced.
- Siri was barely mentioned, and Apple admitted it was lagging.
This year, Siri again took center stage. Siri will be able to draw upon multi-modal user data. For example, finding what everyone is bringing to the potluck by searching voicemail, texts, and emails for a complete list. The Siri ‘app’ will appear on screen as a bubble and have a voice which can be adjusted. Siri also works across devices more efficiently: users can begin on one Apple device (e.g. an iPhone) and finish on another (e.g. a Mac).
The event focused on 3 AI improvements. An Apple Intelligence that is more responsive and easier to use, better safety and trust, and more easily usable across platforms as described above.
Apple explained that much of the AI workload is done by Apple. This is on-device processing using a multi-billion parameter LLM. At its most basic, when more horsepower is needed, private Apple cloud servers are implemented which are designed by Google and are powered by NVIDIA chips. It was highlighted multiple times that the cloud compute work is not stored or saved and even Apple will not have any access to it.
Some of the more impressive demos were image creation applications. For example, photos can be manipulated to show different angles, center, or use a different aspect ratio. Also, Siri can be asked about images and give immediate feedback on details, for example, about where the photo was taken or details about what it is or its historical background.
Apple has been criticized for not doing enough to protect children and balance learning and being digitally connected. It is giving parents easier ways to age-gate usage of applications and search. Images of nudity are blurred if shared—even via FaceTime. Same for gory images.
In our survey of developers, excitement was higher this year than last year. There was some disappointment that there was limited (or zero) chatter regarding foldable form factors or smart glasses, but this was a developers’ conference and new products will be announced separately.
Last year, we wrote that Apple ‘held serve’ with its AI announcements. This year, with its improved Siri story, it accomplished slightly more. However, now there is more pressure to follow through on these heightened Siri expectations.
