The latest research from Counterpoint Research lists the bestselling mobile handsets for the Germany market for the full year 2013.
Samsung dominated the charts strengthening its leading brand position in this important European market. Samsung Galaxy S4 and S3 mini grabbed the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for the best-selling handset rankings in Germany for the full year 2013. Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones captured more than half of the top 10 list, resulting in a total annual market-share of over 40%. The Galaxy S III and Note II also made it into the bestsellers’ list.
Apple’s iPhone 5 captured the third spot followed by the new iPhone 5s despite only being in market for the last 4 months of the year. The new iPhone 5c captured the 7th spot.
Samsung and Apple captured a combined 60% of the total handset market leaving little for other players – especially in the smartphone segment. However, HTC ‘One’ also gained significant traction during the year especially due to an uptick in the second quarter, allowing it to make it into the top 10 models rankings.
Nokia dominated the prepaid feature phone segment with the Nokia 113 and Nokia Asha 300, both making it to the top 20 lists for the year. Sony’s broadening Xperia portfolio benefitted from the Xperia Z and Xperia T that cemented spots in the top 20 list.
Commenting on the competitive landscape, Ludolf Ebner-Chung, Consultant and Partner at Counterpoint Research stated, “Samsung benefitted from its strategy of offering the latest and most advanced technology in its flagship products. However, the best moves were the timing of the product launches and aggressive marketing campaigns creating a ‘wow’ effect in the market. This action successfully captured mindshare away from Apple.”
Mr. Ebner-Chung further adds, “Samsung Galaxy Note 3 could also have made the top 10 list although it was in the market for just a few months. We estimate that large screen smartphones will continue to gain German consumers’ attention. Hence, 2014 will be an important year in Germany for the rising wave of ‘phablets’, with display sizes of 5 inches (12.7cm) or more.”
