  • Amazon Prime Big Deals Day disproportionately discounted new Android versus Apple smartphones.
  • Apple did enjoy the featured spot on the tablet promotions page with the iPad Mini gen 6 available for an attractive price of $349.99.
  • Garmin watches were the most heavily discounted out of the major smartwatch brands while Apple watches saw modest discounts and promotion.
  • Apple’s strongest promotion was on its Apple Air Pod Gen 2 set at 32% off.
  • Amazon announced smartwatches and TWS earbuds were among the top selling electronics this year.

This year, Amazon Prime Big Deal Days was held between October 8 and 9, bringing in scores of online shoppers. However, people have started catching on to the fact that Amazon Prime special event deals are not always as lucrative as the banner “30% off Prime Big Deal” promotes. Nevertheless, there were several good deals this year. For instance, the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was on sale for a low price of $920, a 29% discount, during the event. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 devices were also running on a strong 20% discount. However, during Amazon Prime Big Deal Days 2024, Samsung was the only OEM to enjoy such discounts on current-year flagship devices. Google and Motorola did have some strong discounts, but these were largely on n-2 or n-3 devices like the Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, and Motorola razr 2023 version. Boost’s $0.01 Apple promotions continued to be featured throughout the event with the entire iPhone 16 lineup available for $1,000 for new users on Boost’s Unlimited plan with no trade-in required.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 were featured for $169. However, discounts began in the days leading up to the sales event. The day before the event kicked off, those same earbuds were available at $189 as opposed to the standard $250 price tag. It appears Amazon is attempting to drag sales out with incremental discounts ahead of Prime Big Deal Days and other large sales events.

Apple's promotion on its Watch Series 9, setting the price slightly below the Series 8, along with the brand’s low stock indicates excess inventory of the Series 9 that Apple wants to trim down following the launch of the Series 10. Additionally, Apple's steep discount on the 2nd-generation Watch SE is consistent with strong promotions on the device across carrier channels and national retail channels. Garmin benefitted from strong discounts across its lineup creating some competition for Apple in the smartwatch space. Garmin’s previous model watches offered the heaviest discounts out of the major brands, but its new models had no discounts. The Garmin Fenix 7x was on sale for 28% off and the Garmin Epix Gen 2 was on sale for 31% off. In contrast, the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 is on sale for 7% off.

There were not as many compelling offers in the PC space. However, smart TVs were featured yet again as a big target for more substantial discounts. Many of these discounts remained at similar levels in the days leading up to Prime Big Deal Days. The Amazon Prime events no longer span one or two days but continue to draw customers’ attention over the course of nearly a full week, perhaps in hopes that people will feel more comfortable purchasing more items over a longer period as opposed to a brief two-day duration. While roughly a quarter of shoppers purchased everyday goods, almost half purchased something they were waiting to by according to survey conducted by Numerator. According to Counterpoint Research’s Channel Share Tracker, Amazon’s new smartphone sales have been consistently declining for some time now outside of recent event months. It appears that consumers are growing savvier and are choosing to wait to act on strong promotions in the unlocked channels.
